The Continental Divide where it passes
through Yellowstone National Park. (larger version)The Continental Divide (aka the Great Divide), is a ridge of mountains in North America, which separates the streams that flow west into the Pacific Ocean from those that flow east into the Atlantic Ocean.
The majority of the divide follows the crest of the Rocky Mountains.
It begins in Alaska and continues into the Yukon Territory and British Columbia in Canada and then heads south through Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico in the United States. It then continues south into Mexico and Central America following the crest of the Sierra Madre Occidental.
The lower portion of the border between the Canadian Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta is defined by the continental divide.
The Continental Divide Trail follows the divide through the U.S. from the Mexican border to the Canadian border.

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)
A continental divide is a line of elevated terrain which forms a border between two drainage basins such that water falling on one side of the line eventually travels to one ocean, and water on the other side travels to another, generally on the opposite side of the continent. Since the exact border between oceans is usually not clearly defined, the continental divide is not always definite for any continent. For instance, North America has a clear continental divide in the Rocky Mountains along most of its length, draining into the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west, while Australia has less distinct ocean boundaries around it, and less prominent mountain ranges, making it hard to define a single divide.Source: adapted by the editor from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia under a copyleft GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) from the article "Continental divide."
