Folding chair

Folding chairs of the side-X variety set up for an outdoor event
Folding chairs of the side-X variety set up for an outdoor event

A folding chair is a light portable chair that can be stored in a stack, row or on a specially designed cart (or dolley). They are usually used for seating large amounts of people in an arena where permanent seating is not possible or practical. This includes mostly large outdoor or indoor cultural events such as funerals, college graduation, religious sermons and sport and athletic games and competitions. In the private sphere, folding chairs are used for any social situation requiring extra seating such as [parties]], card games, and temporary seating at the dinner table. They typically weigh between 2 to 5 kilos (five to ten pounds) and are produced in a variety of styles, folding mechanisms and materials.

History

Folding chairs were already being used in Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The curule chair of the Roman magistrate was a folding chair, as well as the seat of the emperor. The frame was mostly made of wood, and seldomly made of metal. The wood was inlaid with artistic carvings, gilded, and decorated with ivory. In Northern Europe, folding chairs date back to the bronze age.

The folding chair became especially widespread during the Middle Ages. Here it was treasured as a liturgical furniture piece. Since the 15th and 16th century the folding chair has mostly had arm and head rests.

Of course, newer chairs which are often found in functions and events are also called folding chairs. Today, the folding chair is mostly made of hard plastic or metal or wood.

Folding chairs can be divided into different categories :

Pivot under seat level

Side-X Stools

Two Xs that can be aligned with a piece of cloth between.

Side-X chairs

The supports for the backrest and front foot is the same side-part. The seat is collapsed to align between the sidebars, either downwards between the front legs, or upwards to align between back-sidebars. Mechanisms vary but the supports for the back and the front feet are invariably the same part.

Front X chairs

Essentially a side-x stool with a backrest.

Bow shape

The supports for the backrest and the hind legs are the same side-part. The seat is collapsed to align between the back-supports. Patented in 2006, but is not yet in production.

Pivot at seat level

Triangle shape

The most common kind of chair, the triangle shape chair was patented by Jeremiah Todd from Oklahoma. The seat automatically aligns between the back supports. The back support and the front legs are the same part.

Pricing

Prices and quality can be roughly divided into three categories, and is largely the same as for stacking chairs:

Low range

Light and cheap furniture made almost invariably from steel tubes and plastic seat and backrest. Costs approximately 15 dollars a piece (2008). Primary consumer market, but also outdoor venues for eating and drinking.

Mid range

More sturdy and a greater variety in styles and materials. They are typically not upholstered. Costs from approximately 25 dollars a piece (2008). Primary market is seating for large arenas, outdoor or places of worship but also cafes and brasseries.

Upper range

These folding chairs are often multiple reinforced, and come with padded seats and backrest. These are mainly sold for sporting events. The seat is sometimes made to fall backward so that it stands upright, making rainwater run off the upholstered seat.

High end

Folding chairs in this category are extremely few and are sold in a very small volume. They cost from 150 to 300 dollars a piece. They may be upholstered, but often they are priced higher because they are associated with a renowned manufacturer.

Professional wrestling

Folding chairs, often referred to as steel chairs or metal chairs - depending on which material they are made from - are also famous for being used as weapons, props, or by other means (set up for other attacks) in the world of professional wrestling. The fact that these types chairs are constantly used in high numbers for seating the audience, announcers, timekeeper, and any other promotion staff or attendees makes them easily and readily available for use. The timekeeper's chair is most often used as a weapon in many cases.

Invention: folding chair

Year    Description
1994Invention patented by Robert W. Jr. 7724 Lake Highland Dr. Fort Worth TX Lynch on November 17th, 1994. Abstract: A folding chair comprises a front, scissors-like X-structure formed by two pivotally coupled rigid members, the lower ends of which form front feet and the upper ends of which form front seat corners of the chair. Rearward the scissors structure, an inverted Y-structure includes a pair of downwardly depending rear legs diverging from a central hinge to form rear feet and a stile pivotally coupled to the hinge and extending upwardly opposite the legs. Two spindles link the front feet to an apex coupled to the hinge by a tether, and two lateral braces link the rear feet to the front seat corners, the braces and the spindles being pivotally coupled together where they cross. The stile opposite the hinge includes a transverse rail from which is suspended a hammock seat extending downward to the front seat corners on the scissors structure. The chair folds to a tight bundle for carrying, the hammock seat doubling as a shoulder sling. The chair quickly deploys by spreading the front feet, thereby causing the rear feet to spread apart and to extend rearwardly from the front feet. The stile, folded downwardly between the rear legs for carrying, pivots upwardly at the hinge and latches into place to support the upper end of the hammock.
1995Invention patented by Carlos M. Ribot on June 6th, 1995. Abstract: A folding chair composed from a blank of stamped material, having various fold lines that define zones in the blank. The blank includes two central zones of a higher height than the remaining zones, two side prolonged zones that protrude from the lateral sides of the central zones, and two inner prolonged zones extending from the side prolonged zones and joined together with at least one connection flange. The blank further includes an "ear" extending from an upper edge of one of the side prolonged zones and forming the seat of the chair and an "ear" extending from an upper area of the side prolonged zone and forming the back of the chair. Each ear is provided with a respective connection flange. The chair is formed by folding the blank along the fold lines and then joining the connection flanges to their designated connection areas.
1995Invention patented by Chin-chang Cheng on July 5th, 1995. Abstract: A folding chair includes a pair of posts, a pair of foldable armrests having one end slideably and pivotably connected to the posts, a seat having one end pivotably connected to the posts and another end pivotably connected to the armrests, and a pair of two supporting rods arranged in a cross manner and pivotably connected to each other having two upper ends respectively pivotably connected to one of the posts and the seat via a supporting lever and two lower ends with one end extending toward one of the posts and fixedly connected therewith and the other end extending away therefrom.
1995Invention patented by Robert W. Jr. 7724 Lake Highland Dr. Fort Worth TX Lynch on December 12th, 1995. Abstract: A chair includes a first leg frame having first side rails with upper ends and a front cross rail connected to the upper ends; a second leg frame having second side rails; a back frame having back side rails with upper ends and a top cross rail connected to the upper ends of the back side rails; a frame link assembly having frame link members; a flexible support member extending between the top cross rail and the front cross rail; and, a central back link. One of the second side rails is pivotally connected along a first axis to one of the back side rails and is pivotally connected along a second axis to one of the first side rails, one of the frame link members is pivotally connected along a third pivot axis to one of the back side rails and is pivotally connected along a fourth pivot axis to one of the first side rails, and said central back link is pivotally connected along the first pivot axis to one of the second side rails and is pivotally connected along the third pivot axis to one of the frame link members.
2002Invention patented by Alexander Guy Chan on March 14th, 2002. Abstract: A folding chair having a novel hinge and joint surface configuration that forms a substantially rigid structure approximating conventional non-folding chair designs. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a folding chair comprising a seat frame, a backrest frame hinged proximally to the rear edge of the seat frame and forwardly collapsible over the upper surface of the seat frame, and back legs hinged to the rear edge of the seat frame and forwardly collapsible over the lower surface of the seat frame. The chair, in one embodiment, further comprises front legs hinged to the seat frame and collapsible over the back legs. In an assembled state, the back legs and the backrest frame each abut against elements of the chair at joint surfaces, which limit the range of motion of the hinged members to thereby create a chair having a rigid support structure. In one embodiment, the seat frame, backrest frame, and back legs unfold into an interlocked configuration enhancing the stability of the chair.
2003Invention patented by Toung-Chun Pan on May 8th, 2003. Abstract: A folding chair includes two pairs of intersected legs. A traverse pivot rail interconnects the intersections of the two pairs of legs. Two support mechanisms are spaced along the pivot rail, each support mechanism comprising an upper hole. Two cylinder pads are anchored in the upper holes. Two fastening mechanisms each include an upper section and a lower section, each section having a half tube mating and coupled to each other with the pivot rail passed therethrough. A seat is pivotably secured to the pivot rail by fasteners threaded through the upper and the lower sections and into the seat. In a use position, the seat is adapted to exhibit an elastic, downward movement as buffered by the cylinder pads. In a folding operation, the seat is turned about the pivot rail until being stopped by a chair back.
