Common Expressions: uncanny

Expressions Definition
The uncanny When we proceed to review things, persons, impressions, events and situations which are able to arouse in us a feeling of the uncanny in a particularly forcible and definite form, the first requirement is obviously to select a suitable example to start on. Jentsch has taken as a very good instance 'doubts whether an apparently animate being is really alive; or conversely, whether a lifeless object might not be in fact animate'; and he refers in this connection to the impression made by waxwork figures, ingeniously constructed dolls and automata. To these he adds the uncanny effect of epileptic fits, and of manifestations of insanity, because these excite in the spectator the impression of automatic, mechanical processes at work behind the 'ordinary appearance of mental activity. Without entirely accepting this author's view, we will take it as a starting point for our own investigation because in what follows he reminds us of a writer who has succeeded in producing uncanny effects better than anyone else. (references)
Uncanny Tales A Canadian science fiction magazine that ran from November 1940 to September 1943. It was created due to the wartime reduction of imports on British and American science fiction pulp magazines (which were, astonishingly, then being used as ship ballast!). (references)
Uncanny Valley The Uncanny Valley is a principle of robotics concerning the emotional response of humans to robots and other non-human entities. It was theorized by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori in 1970. The principle states that as a robot is made more humanlike in its appearance and motion the emotional response from a human being to robot will become increasingly positive and empathic, until a point is reached at which the response suddenly becomes strongly repulsive; as the appearance and motion are made to be indistinguishable to that of human being, the emotional response becomes positive once more and approaches human-human empathy levels. Uncanny

Uncanny may refer to:

  • Uncanny, a novel by Paul Jennings.
  • "The uncanny," a mode of fantastic fiction as defined in Tzvetan Todorov's The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre.
  • Colloquially, Uncanny X-Men. When comic book readers discuss the book, they usually only use the "Uncanny" portion to differentiate it from the other X-Men books, such as Astonishing X-Men or X-Men, vol. 2 ("Adjectiveless X-Men").
  • The Uncanny Valley is a principle of robotics concerning the emotional response of humans to robots and other non-human entities.
