Specialty Expressions: vertical crater retreat

ExpressionsDomainDefinition
Vertical crater retreatMining1: A panel development commences with the driving of top sill and undercut drifts, delineating the block to be mined. Each stope or panel will be generally 15 m square by 65 m high. Large diameter holes, usually around 165 mm in diameter, are drilled vertically from to bottom. The toe of each hole is loaded with a pre-determined weight of explosives and each hole is crater blasted, in series, into a void below. Horizontal ore slices each 3-4 m thick are blasted down. Ore is loaded out from the undercut usually by remote controlled LHDs or continuous loading machines. Only enough broken ore is extracted, after each slice is extracted, to allow room for the next slice. Source: European Union. (references)
2: A. A blasting method employed in underground sublevel mining. Initially a vertical slot extending across the width of the stope is mined. The remaining portion of the stope is then blasted by section into the vertical slot following sublevel procedures b. A variation of the sublevel stoping method that uses basic crater blasting models. Blasting is carried out at the base of vertical boreholes, making horizontal cuts and advancing upwards. A spherical charge is placed at an optimal distance from the stope back so that a maximum volume of rock is broken in the shape of an inverted cone. Borehole spacing is determined so that overlapping fragmentation cones do not disturb adjacent explosive charges. Abbrev. VCR. (references)
Vertical crater retreat miningMiningA patented mining method in which large, parallel, vertical drill holes permit placement of nearly spherical explosive charges, such that horizontal slices of ore are then broken into an undercut; applicable to ore of only moderate strength. (references)
